Goldenseal Coptis chinensis is a variety of Hydrastis Canadensis, same family but with a higher content of isochinolic alkaloids and a significantly wider therapeutic range. The main isochinolic alkaloids present are berberine, hydrastinine, coptisine, palmatine and canadine. It also contains biotin, essential oils, resins, inositol, vitamins A, C, E, minerals and phytosterols. Berberine alkaloids are one of the most powerful anti-parasitic. It kills both intestinal parasites and the ones present in the blood or internal organs.
Berberine is known for its beneficial effects. The Coptis chinensis root berberine has beneficial effects on intestinal parasites, eye infections, cardiovascular diseases, inflammatory diseases, infections with various parasites, bacterial infections (especially the sinuses, ears, eyes, urinary system, stomach, intestines ), viral infections (including herpes). Due to the berberine content it is efficient against Helicobacter pylori, Giardia, Klebsiella, Borrelia, Candida, Protozoans, Helminths, and Chlamydia.
Piper nigrum is recognized for stimulating digestion and also for it’s anti-bacterial action in the digestive system.
Provita Nutrition Goldenseal Studies:
A comprehensive compilation of the effects of Coptis chinensis (Rhizoma Coptidis) root was published in 2009 by a group of researchers from the Tianjin Institute of Pharmaceutical Research. It was concluded that Coptis chinensis root extract has extensive pharmacological benefits including anti-carcinogenic, anti-microbial, hypoglycemic, LDL cholesterol reduction, anti-inflammatory action and anti free radicals. Its anti-bacterial effect is extremely effective against Staphylococcus aureus. The uniqueness of Coptis extract makes it one of the most effective treatments in Lyme disease caused by infection with Borrelia. It is also an excellent anti-fungal agent, especially for Candida infections, Helicobacter, Toxoplasma. Berberine acts against 43 strains of Staphylococcus aureus! It also has a hypoglycemic effect like Metformin (an oral antidiabetic drug). Goldenseal Coptis is therefore useful in preventing Type 2 diabetes
Recent research on the alkaloids found in Coptis has demonstrated their destructive action of telomerase in cancer cells, a strong anticancer effect. Anticancer action is also manifested by specific anti-inflammatory effects, knowing that cellular inflammation leads to the emergence and proliferation of malignant cells. Berberine in Coptis increases the activity of protein kinase activated by AMP leading to phosphorylation of the p53 gene, thus increasing levels of p21 / WAF1 also known as cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 1 or CDK-interacting protein 1. This effect translates into an antimetastatic action with application in cases of leukemia, melanoma and solid tumors.
Piperine substantially increases the bioavailability of coptis alkaloids and boosts its therapeutic efficiency.
More About Coptis Chinensis (root extract) – Other common names: Huanglian, Goldthread, Goldenthread, Chinese Goldenseal, Coptis, Rhizoma coptidis:
Coptis chinensis is well known and widely used in China since the Ming dynasty time. Coptis chinensis belongs to the family Ranunculaceae, being directly related with Hydrastis Canadensis (Goldenseal). Hydrastis Canadensis (Goldenseal) has earned its reputation because of its alkaloids present mainly in roots, (the most important being berberine), with anti-inflammatory, antiparasitic, antifungal, antibacterial and antioxidant. Goldenseal is a plant considered endangered in its natural habitat in North America and is protected by law, the raw material used by manufacturers of supplements currently being from crop plants. More and more manufacturers and herbal pharmacists in North America and Europe produce and recommend supplements based Coptis chinensis that grows abundantly in China. The reason is that the same alkaloids found in Hydrastis Canadensis is found in Coptis chinensis but in a higher proportion.
Provita Nutrition Goldenseal alkaloids have anticancer effects when administered along with anticancer drugs, subject to a clinical trial in metastatic breast cancer, conducted in 2004 for the U.S. Army by Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research New York, USA. The trial took place over a period of 6 months using the crescendo starting doses in to 16 capsules of 500 mg per day (Coptis chinensis root extract containing 25% berberine) to a dose of 41 capsules / day. Regarding side effects, dosages only very large, more than 21 capsules per day, in some patients there was a mild form of diarrhea. The conclusion was that administration of extract of Coptis chinensis is safe, non-toxic and lead to inhibition of cancer cell proliferation by 50%, the main alkaloid responsible for these effects is Berberine.
Indeed, Berberine is known for its beneficial effects. According to its Monograph, Berberine has beneficial effects in bacterial diarrhea, intestinal parasites, eye infections, cardiovascular diseases, inflammatory diseases. Berberine is non-toxic at normal dosages and can only induce intestinal discomfort at dosages much higher than usual.
In a study of the Department of Cardiology, University Hospital Geneva, Switzerland, the content of berberine showed positive effects on metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. A study at the Clinical Center of Endocrine and Metabolic Shanghai showed that berberine from Coptis chinensis led to significant enhancement of symptoms in type 2 diabetes along with improvement of lipid profile in patients.
The anti-inflammatory extract of Coptis chinensis has proven beneficial in hepatocellular carcinoma in a study conducted in 2009 at the University of Hong Kong. A comprehensive compilation of the effects of taking Coptis chinensis (Rhizoma Coptidis) root was published in 2009 by a group of researchers from Tianjin Pharmaceutical Research Institute, China. It was concluded that Coptis chinensis root extract has extensive pharmacological activities including anti-carcinogenic potential anti-microbial, hypoglycemic activity and LDL cholesterol reduction, anti-inflammatory action and anti free radicals. Because it’s antibacterial effect, Coptis Chinensis is effective against Staphylococcus aureus.
A study in 2010 by researchers at Harvard University Faculty of Medicine, Boston, USA concludes that anti-inflammatory effect of Coptis chinensis is effective in treating cancer when associated chemotherapy
As Hydrastis Canadensis, Coptis chinensis root extract is as safe, nontoxic and has absolutely no side effects up to high dosages of more than 20 grams / day.
